Brompyrazon is a selective herbicide used to control broadleaved weeds in cereals. It is considered obsolete in the developed world. It is moderately soluble in water but other data relating to environmental fate is scarce. It has a low oral mammalian toxicity.
Brompyrazon is manufactured through a structured synthetic process that builds the pyridazinone ring system from phenylhydrazine and diketone precursors, followed by controlled bromination at the 4 position and amination at the 5 position to yield 5 amino 4 bromo 2 phenylpyridazin 3 one. The crude product is then purified and crystallised to achieve high purity before being formulated into herbicidal products.
