Propoxycarbazone is usually prepared as the sodium salt and is commercially produced through a multi-step synthesis involving triazolone and benzoate intermediates. The process begins with the formation of a substituted triazolone ring, which is then reacted with a sulfonyl isocyanate to introduce the sulfonylurea linkage. This intermediate is further coupled with a methyl benzoate derivative to yield the final active compound. The sodium salt form is obtained by neutralising the acidic groups with sodium hydroxide to form the herbicide.
