Nifedipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker widely used as a coronary vasodilator for the treatment of hypertension and angina. Aside from its hypotensive effects, nifedipine exhibits cardiac organ-protective effects, ameliorates endothelial dysfunctions through an anti-apoptotic effect, displays antioxidant activity, reduces gastric acid secretion, has been used as a tocolytic agent to delay preterm labor, reduces the number of Raynaud’s phenomenon attacks, and has proved effective in addressing high-altitude pulmonary edema.
