Ipsapirone, also known as TVX Q 7821, is a SR-1A agonist and has been found to selectively bind to SR-1 receptors. Only at high doses, this compound shows the ability to inhibit 1-adrenergic and SR-2 function. Exposure of ethanol treated rhombencephalic neurons to Ipsapirone has been reported to prevent ethanol-associated apoptosis of the cells and also activate the PI3K/Akt pro-survival pathway. Additionally, the expression of NF-κB dependent anti-apoptotic genes as well as Bcl-XL, catalase, and XIAP expression were augmented in the rhombencephalic neurons.
