It is used in the preparation of silicotungstate butylmethylimidazolium bromide and charge transfer compounds with Keggin anions. It is also used in catalyst preparation, which is useful for catalytic liquid-phase oxidation of xylene. Further, it acts as a mediator in production of hydrogen through electrolysis of water.
