Chemical Properties
White, crystalline powder. Very solu-
ble in water and polar organic solvents; relatively
insoluble in nonpolar organic solvents. Strong acid.
Noncombustible.
Uses
Silicotungstic Acid Hydrate is used as the reactant for Preparation of silicotungstate butylmethylimidazolium bromide ionic liquid hybrid material, Synthesis of SnII-substituted Keggin-type polyoxometalates as photocatalysts, Preparation of silicotungstic acid/organically modified silane proton-conducting membranes, Preparation of charge transfer compounds with Keggin anions, Preparation of catalyst for catalytic liquid-phase oxidation of xylene.
Uses
Catalyst for organic synthesis, minerals separation, reagent for alkaloids. Silicotungstic Acid Hydrate prepares ethyl acetate and acetic acid from ethylene. It is used to prepare silicotungstate butylmethylimidazolium bromide and charge transfer compounds with Keggin anions. It is also used in catalyst preparation and is useful for catalytic liquid-phase oxidation of xylene. Further, it acts as a mediator in hydrogen production through water electrolysis.
Purification Methods
Extract the acid with diethyl ether from a solution acidified with HCl. The diethyl ether is evaporated under vacuum, and the free acid is crystallised twice [Matijevic & Kerker J Phys Chem 62 1271 1958].
