  • Manufacturing Process 100 parts by weight of toluene, 330 parts of sulfur and 80 parts of aluminum chloride were heated to reflux on the oil bath before the formation of hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen chloride ended. The mixture was poured into water for removing the excess of aluminum chloride. A toluene layer was separated, dried and distilled in vacuum. When toluene was distilled off, about 500 parts by weight the residual yellow oil boiled at 150°-230°C/3 mm Hg was yielded. An objectionable odor was removed by shaking with sodium hydroxide. The residual sulfur (23-25%) was removed by washing with hydrogen peroxide. The residue (mesulfen) looked like fragile asphalt mass after distillation.
