Synthesis
General procedure for the synthesis of 2-fluoro-5-nitrophenylacetic acid from o-fluorophenylacetic acid: o-fluorobenzoic acid (30.0 g, 0.19 mol) was dissolved in a mixed solution of concentrated sulfuric acid (50 mL) and water (10 mL). A mixed solution of fuming nitric acid (10 mL) and water (10 mL) was added slowly and dropwise at 0 °C. The reaction mixture was kept stirred at 0 °C for 30 min. Upon completion of the reaction, the resulting precipitate was collected by filtration and washed with cold water. Finally, the product was dried under vacuum to afford 2-(2-fluoro-5-nitrophenyl)acetic acid as a white solid (35.2 g, 91% yield).
