Chemical Properties
Clear colorless to slightly yellow liquid
Uses
High-energy fuels, curing agents, plasticizers, resins, surface coatings, pharmaceuticals, dyes.
Uses
Methylcyclopentadiene dimer is used to study the competition with ethylene for binding and biological activities. Used in the synthesis of rubbers and resins intended for use in contact with food or drink.
General Description
A colorless liquid. Slightly less dense than water and insoluble in water. Hence floats on water. Flash point 140°F.
Air & Water Reactions
Flammable. Insoluble in water.
Reactivity Profile
METHYLCYCLOPENTADIENE DIMER may react vigorously with strong oxidizing agents. Can react exothermically with reducing agents to release gaseous hydrogen. May undergo autoxidation upon exposure to the air to form explosive peroxides. Explosions in ammonia synthesis gas have been traced to the breakdown of addition products of dienes similar to this diene and oxides of nitrogen produced from the interaction of nitrogen oxide and oxygen [Bretherick, 1995].
Hazard
Moderate fire risk.
Health Hazard
Harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through skin. Vapor or mist is irritating to the eyes, mucous membrane, upper respiratory tract. Exposure can cause nausea, headache, and vomiting. May contain 0.5% Benzene, a known carcinogen.
Fire Hazard
Special Hazards of Combustion Products: Vapors may travel considerable distance to a source of ignition and flash back. Forms explosive mixtures in air. Container explosion may occur under fire conditions.
Flammability and Explosibility
Flammable
