Chemical Properties
Colorless liquid. Slightly soluble in water, soluble in Propylene glycol, miscible with alcohol and oils. Warm-spicy-herbaceous odor, somewhat reminiscent of the odor of Carrot seed, sweeter than the odor of Carvacryl acetate.
Uses
Carvacryl ethyl ether is used in spice flavor compositions as a modifier and sweetener for Carvacrol (if this phenol is used)
Synthesis
Carvacryl ethyl ether is prepared from Carvacrol with Diethylsulfate in cold weak aqueous alkali solution.
Preparation
By passing vapors of ethyl alcohol and carvacrol over a catalyst (ThO2) at 400 to 500°C.
