Description
Sparteine is effective against sinoatrial and
atrial tachycardias, atrial extrasystoles, and also
against ventricular arrhythmias . Despite
prolongation of the myocardial refractory period
in vitro, theECGtimes are not prolonged in vivo.
Chemical Properties
Viscous oily liquid; boils around 180°C(356°F); density 1.02 at 20°C (68°F); stronglybasic, a 0.01 M soln. has pH 11.6; slightlysoluble in water (0.3 g/100 mL), dissolvesreadily in alcohol, ether, or chloroform.
Uses
Sparteine occurs in yellow and black lupinbeans (Lupinus luteus L. and L. niger). Italso occurs in other Lupinus species aswell as in Cytisus and Spartium species.Therapeutically, it is used as an oxytocicagent.

Health Hazard
Toxic actions of sparteine are similar to thoseof coniine but are much less toxic than thoseof coniine. The toxic symptoms in mice weretremor, muscle contraction, and respiratorydistress. An intraperitoneal dose lethal toguinea pigs is 23 mg/kg.
