Description
Huangjiangsu A is a natural active ingredient found in many plants such as Dioscorea villosa and Polygonatum multiflorum. It belongs to the steroidal saponin class of compounds. Huangjiangsu A is not cytotoxic, and treatment of HepG2 cells with it prior to exposure to H2O2 was effective in increasing cell viability in a concentration-dependent manner. In addition, 50 μM of Huangjiangsu A, pseudoprotodioscin, methyl protobioside, protodioscin, and protodeltonin increased GSH levels and reduced intracellular ROS production, thereby counteracting H2O2-induced injury. Thus, Huangjiangsu A has hepatoprotective potential against H2O2-induced cytotoxicity and ROS generation, and is expected to be a potential drug for the treatment of liver diseases
