Description
Butonate is a largely obsolete insecticide that was used to control flying insects. It is moderately soluble in water. It is moderately toxic to birds and fish but highly toxic to aquatic invertebrates. It is also moderately toxic to mammals if ingested as well as being an acetyl cholinestrase inhibitor and neurotoxin.
Uses
Dimethyl 1-(ButyrYl-Oxy)-2,2,2-trichloroethylphosphonate is used in methods and formulations for preventing downward migration of agricultural materials.
Definition
ChEBI: Butonate is a fatty acid ester and a butyrate ester.
Production Methods
The commercial production of butonate involves the esterification of butyric acid derivatives with dimethyl phosphonate intermediates, incorporating a trichloroethyl group to enhance insecticidal activity. The synthesis typically includes chlorination, esterification, and phosphorylation steps under controlled conditions to ensure product stability and efficacy.
Mechanism of action
Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor
Pesticide Type
Insecticide
