General Description
Complement factor H (CFH) codes for 20 complement-control protein modules (CCPs 1–20). It is expressed in the liver, mesangial cells, endothelial cells and fibroblasts. It is a membrane cofactor protein. The CFH gene is localized on human chromosome 1q31.3.Biochem/physiol Actions
Complement factor H (CFH) is a negative regulator of the alternative pathway. It suppresses spontaneous complement activation and its response on self surfaces. CFH possesses decay-accelerating activity and destabilizes the C3b amplification in the alternate complement pathway. It also has a role in C3b cleavage by its cofactor activity. The protein has been linked to various diseases like age-related macular degeneration, kidney disorder and C3 glomerulopathy.
