Description
PLATINUM BARIUM CYANIDE is a crystals with brilliant polychromism (pleochroism), iridescent violet-blue on the prism faces, yellow-green in the axial direction. Solubility (20°C) 3.5 g./l00 g. H2O. d 2.076.
Chemical Properties
Yellow or green crystals. Soluble in water; insoluble in alcohol.
Production Methods
A solution of PtCl3 or K3PtCl4 is added to a cold, saturated solution of KCN (use a good hood!). The precipitated K3Pt(CN)4·3 H3O is filtered off with suction. K3Pt(CN)4·3 H3O is dissolved in water and treated with a concentrated aqueous solution of BaCl3. The precipitated BaPt(CN)4·4 H3O is filtered off with suction and washed with cold water.
Synthesis
A solution of PtCl3 or K3PtCl4 is added to a cold, saturated solution of KCN (use a good hood!). The precipitated K3Pt(CN)4 ? 3 H3O is filtered off with suction. If it is to be used for preparing the barium salt, it is dissolved in water and treated with a concentrated aqueous solution of BaCl3. The precipitated BaPt(CN)4 ? 4 H3O is filtered off with suction and washed with cold water.
