Synthesis
The general procedure for the synthesis of thiazole-2(3H)-thione from chloroacetaldehyde and ammonium dithiocarbamate was as follows: a 40% solution of chloroacetaldehyde (0.61 mol) was slowly added to 100 mL of water, keeping the reaction temperature below 5 °C. Subsequently, 67 g of ammonium dithiocarbamate (0.61 mol) was added in batches. After the addition was completed, the reaction mixture was gradually warmed up to room temperature and stirred continuously for 2 h to promote complete reaction. A white solid precipitated during the reaction and the product was collected by filtration. The resulting filter cake was washed sequentially with a small amount of ethanol and cold water to remove impurities. Finally, the product was dried to give 66.2 g of white solid thiazole-2(3H)-thione in 93% yield.
