Uses
Betanidine is a betacyanin and an aglycone of the beet dye betanin.
Definition
ChEBI: Bethanidine is a member of guanidines. It has a role as an adrenergic antagonist and an antihypertensive agent.
Manufacturing Process
A mixture of 2-bromobenzylamine (12.5 g) and S-methylthiouronium sulfate
(10 g) in water (20 ml) was heated for 1.5 hours on a steam bath in a hood,
during which methylmercaptan escaped (as evidenced by a foul odour). The
reaction mixture was then cooled and diluted with ethanol (100 ml). A
colourless solid of 2-bromobenzylguanidine sulfate was separeted, and washed
with ethanol. This solid melted at 230-232°C; it was recrystallized from water
and then melted at 247-248°C. By action of a basic agent the salt obtained
may be converted into free base.
