Uses
Dioxane Bromonium Bromide is used in the synthesis of 2-hydroxy glycals. Also used in the preparation of phytoalexins acting as antimicrobial and antioxidants.
Application
Bromine-1,4-dioxane complex can be used as a brominating agent for phenols and aromatic amines, as well as a reagent for α-bromination of aldehydes and ketones.
Preparation
A 1:1 complex between 1,4-dioxane and bromine has been prepared and isolated on a 2 mol scale by the addition of bromine to 1,4-dioxane. Bromine-1,4-dioxane complex has also been prepared in situ.
storage
The complex is reported to be volatile (much material was lost on drying). It can be stored at 0 °C. This material should only be handled in a fume hood.
