Chemical Properties
Colorless liquids or solids with slight ethereal odor.
Chemical Properties
White solid or colorless liquid; slightly
camphor-like odor when concentrated. Insoluble in
water; soluble in alcohol. Nonflammable.
Physical properties
Clear, colorless liquid or solid with a faint, ethereal or camphor-like odor. Evaporates quickly
when spilled.
Uses
As a refrigerant; solvent extractant; as
a blowing or foaming agent.
General Description
Colorless low-melting solid or liquid with a slight ethereal odor. Mp: 26.5°C; bp: 92.5°C. Density (of liquid): 1.64 g cm-3 at 30°C. Used as a refrigerant, a solvent extractant, and in dry cleaning.
Reactivity Profile
1,2-DIFLUOROTETRACHLOROETHANE is non-flammable. Incompatible with active metals such as potassium, sodium, beryllium, powdered aluminum, zinc, magnesium, and calcium. Reacts with acids.
Hazard
Toxic by inhalation.
Health Hazard
At high concentrations, 1,1,2,2-
tetrachloro-1,2-difluoroethane affects the nervous
system and causes pulmonary edema in
animals; it is expected that severe exposure in
humans will produce the same effects.
There are no reports of adverse effects in
humans.
Safety Profile
A poison by inhalation. Moderately toxic by ingestion. A sktn and eye irritant. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of Fand Cl-. See also CHLORINATED HYDROCARBONS, ALIPHATIC; and FLUORIDES.
Potential Exposure
Possible risk of forming tumors, Primary irritant (w/o allergic reaction).
