Methyl allyl ketone, also known as 4-penten-2-one, is a colorless liquid with crotonaldehyde-like odor. Boiling point 107~108℃. Soluble in ethanol, ether, acetone, insoluble in water. This compound exhibits characteristics of both olefins and ketones. When subjected to acidic conditions, it undergoes isomerization into 3-penten-2-one.

Used as synthetic reagent, spice, food additive.
Preparation
Synthesized from 3-penten-2-one by heating isomerization in oxalic acid solution.
