  solution of pinacolato (BCH2I) (5.36 g, 0.02 mol) was added to 10 mL of benzene. Then, a mixture of sodium metal (0.02 mol + 15% excess) and 15 mL of benzene was slowly added, and the mixture was heated overnight under reflux. The reaction was monitored by GC/MS until complete. After cooling, the resulting reaction solution was filtered, and the solvent was removed under vacuum. Using 10% ether/petroleum ether as the eluent, both products were purified by silica gel column chromatography to obtain a pure, colorless, oily compound, bis[(pinacolato)boryl]methane.
