Hydrogenated vegetable oil, after centrifugation to remove catalysts, bleaching and deodorizing, and the addition of flavorings, colorings, vitamins, and antioxidants, becomes margarine, widely used in food processing. Because it is not easily oxidized and deteriorates, has a good flavor, is cholesterol-free, and is inexpensive, it is often used as a substitute for animal butter. In pharmaceuticals, type I hydrogenated vegetable oil is used as a lubricant in tablets and capsules at a concentration of 1%–6% (w/w), often in combination with talc; it can also be used as a skeleton-forming material in lipophilic controlled-release systems, as a coating excipient in controlled-release formulations, as an auxiliary binder in tablets, and as a viscosity modifier in oily liquids and semi-solids.
