It has a role as an antimetabolite, an antibacterial agent, a bacterial metabolite and a fungal metabolite. It is a terminal acetylenic compound and a non-proteinogenic L-alpha-amino acid. It is functionally related to a L-propargylglycine. It is a tautomer of a L-beta-ethynylserine zwitterion.
