  Generally, the stratum corneum of normal skin should retain 10% to 20% moisture to maintain elasticity, plumpness, luster, and prevent cracking. This moisture content is maintained by the sebum film, which prevents moisture evaporation, and by the presence of natural moisturizing factors (NMF) within the stratum corneum. Sericin is rich in polar amino acids, containing polar groups such as -OH, -COOH, and -NH2, possessing similar components and functions to moisturizing factors. Cosmetics containing sericin, such as lotions, facial cleansers, and facial washes, are already available in Japan. Research indicates that skin darkening is due to the oxidation caused by tyrosinase in melanocytes. Hideyuki Yamada's research found that sericin can inhibit the activity of this enzyme and retains this ability even after boiling. In sericin proteins, tyrosine (Tyr), tryptophan (Trp), and phenylalanine (Phe) can absorb ultraviolet rays, preventing sunburn and tanning.;
