White needle-shaped crystals. Weakly alkaline, changes color at 170°C, with no definite melting point. Specific optical rotation [α]¹⁴_D: +247° (0.4%, methanol), +253° (0.4%, dimethylformamide), +298° (0.4%, arsenic). Insoluble in water, freely soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide and dimethylformamide; soluble in pyridine, and slightly soluble in low-molecular-weight alcohols.

Poison by intraperitoneal andintravenous routes. When heated to decomposition itemits toxic fumes of NOx.
