Uses
Tricamba is an antiparasitic agent. A herbicide.
Definition
ChEBI: Tricamba is a methoxybenzoic acid that is 2-methoxybenzoic acid which is substituted at position 3, 5, and 6 by chlorines. It has a role as an agrochemical, a herbicide and a synthetic auxin. It is a methoxybenzoic acid and a trichlorobenzene.
Production Methods
Tricamba was manufactured through a straightforward chlorination and ester formation sequence typical of early synthetic auxin herbicides. Producers began with a methyl substituted benzoic acid and subjected it to electrophilic chlorination to introduce the required chloro substituents on the aromatic ring. The resulting chlorinated acid was then converted to its amide or ester form (depending on the marketed variant) by reaction with the appropriate alcohol or amine under standard condensation conditions. Final purification relied on solvent crystallisation to yield technical grade tricamba suitable for formulation.
Mechanism of action
Selective, systemic, absorbed through leaves and translocates throughout plant. Synthetic auxin.
Safety Profile
Poison by ingestion. When heatedto decomposition it emits toxic fumes of Clí. Used as anherbicide.
