Synthesis
(b) A mixture of 1-(5-chloro-2-nitrophenyl)ethanone (4.40 g, 22.05 mmol), PtO2 (40 mg), and activated charcoal (400 mg) in ethanol (80 mL) was subjected to a hydrogen atmosphere with rapid stirring at room temperature for 4.5 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the mixture was filtered through a diatomaceous earth pad (the residue was washed with dichloromethane) and subsequently concentrated under reduced pressure. The concentrated residue was filtered through a pad of silica gel (eluent was dichloromethane/petroleum ether, 4:1) to give a light green oily substance. The oily substance was recrystallized by ethyl ether/petroleum ether to give 1-(2-amino-5-chlorophenyl)ethanone (3.30 g, 88% yield) as light green crystals.
