ORANGE CRYSTALLINE POWDER AND CHUNKS

Toxic by ingestion and inhalation.

Fifty grams of fine K2Cr2O7 powder is dissolved in a mixture of 65 ml. of cone. HCl and 50 ml. of water (by heating to 70 °C). The solution is filtered through a jacketed funnel heated with hot water. After 1-2 days, the nascent crystals are filtered off with suction, recrystallized from glacial acetic acid, and dried in a vacuum desiccator over H2SO4.
