GENERAL METHOD: An appropriate amount of bromophenyl streptanoic acid (1 equiv.) was dissolved in methanol (25 mL) and stirred to form a homogeneous solution. Sulfuric acid (0.1 equiv. concentration solution) was slowly added to this solution and the reaction mixture was subsequently heated to reflux and maintained for 18 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the mixture was cooled to room temperature and concentrated under reduced pressure to remove the solvent. The concentrated oily product was diluted with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution (50 mL) and subsequently extracted with ether (3 x 25 mL). All ether extracts were combined, washed with brine (100 mL) and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. After filtration to remove the desiccant, the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to give the target product methyl 3-bromo-3-phenylpropionate.
