Description
Flupyrsulfuron-methyl-sodium is a selective sulfonylurea herbicide for post-emergence control of broadleaved weeds in cereals. It is moderately soluble in water but less so in organic solvents. Its volatility is low and it tends not to persistent in soil or water-sediment systems. No significant risks to human health have been identified. Toxicity to biodiversity tends to be low to moderate with the exception of algae and aquatic plants where flupyrsulfuron-methyl-sodium is highly toxic.

Production Methods
Flupyrsulfuron-methyl-sodium is commercially synthesized through a multi-step process that builds its complex heterocyclic structure. The synthesis typically begins with the formation of a 4,6-dimethoxypyrimidine derivative, which is then coupled with a trifluoromethyl-substituted nicotinic acid intermediate. This coupling forms the sulfonylurea linkage central to the molecule. The methyl ester of the resulting compound is then converted into its sodium salt form to enhance water solubility and formulation stability.

Flupyrsulfuron‐methyl‐sodium (DPX‐KE459) is a post‐emergent cereal herbicide designed for the control of problem grass weeds, such as Alopecurus myosuroides and Apera spica‐venti, as well as a wide range of broadleaf weeds.
