What is the difference between antioxidant 1076 and 1010?

Sep 25,2024

Introduction

Antioxidants are substances that extend or delay the oxidation of materials, a chemical process involving the reaction of a material with oxygen. In the context of plastics, oxidation can lead to the degradation of polymer chains, resulting in changes in physical and mechanical properties. Antioxidants interrupt these oxidation reactions, extending the lifespan and maintaining the integrity of plastic products.

Antioxidant 1076 and antioxidant 1010 both belong to the main antioxidant, hindered phenolic antioxidants, and from the product form, the two are very similar; antioxidant 1076 is a white powder, while antioxidant 1010 is also – a white powder form. Because the same belongs to the main antioxidant, from the mechanism of action, antioxidants 1076 and 1010 are reacted with oxygen centre radicals to generate inactive products so as to achieve the role of product protection. However, 168 belongs to decompose hydroperoxides.

Both are hindered phenolic antioxidants, but the effective functional group of 1010 is four times more than that of antioxidant 1076, which means it is more effective. The main considerations for usage are compatibility with the resin at a later stage and processing conditions.

Antioxidant 1076

Antioxidant 1076 (octadecyl 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionate) is a hindered phenolic antioxidant commonly used as a stabilizer in various materials. Its structure combines an octadecyl chain, a phenolic group with tert-butyl substituents, and a propionate ester group. The propionate ester group in Antioxidant 1076 enhances its solubility in polymers and other organic materials, making it easier to incorporate during processing and improving its distribution within the material. Antioxidant 1076 is odorless and tasteless. It is stable against light and can be used in polymer materials such as polyethylene, polystyrene, polyamide, ABS, synthetic rubber, etc. It is a non-staining, high molecular weight, hindered phenolic antioxidant. Because of its low volatility, Antioxidant 1076 imparts excellent heat stability and colour retention, with good compatibility and low extractability.

Antioxidant 1010

Antioxidant 1010, also known as Irganox 1010, is a type of phenolic antioxidant widely used in the plastic industry. This compound plays an impactful role in preventing the degradation of plastics caused by oxidative processes. Antioxidant 1010 belongs to the class of hindered phenolic antioxidants. Its chemical name is tetrakis[methylene(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyhydrocinnamate)] methane. The structure of Antioxidant 1010 features multiple functional groups, including hydroxyl and tert-butyl moieties. These structural elements contribute to its ability to scavenge free radicals and interrupt the oxidation process.

Antioxidant 1010 finds application in plastics, rubber, latex, varnishes, adhesives, TPR's and HotMelts. In plastics, antioxidant 1010 provides excellent antioxidant performance in PolyethylenePolystyrene, Polyacetal, PVC, AS resin, Methacrylic resin, Polycarbonate, Polyester, Polymethylpentene, and many others. Antioxidant 1010 can be used in rubbers in SBR, EPR, and EPDM. Polybutadiene, Neoprene, Nitrile, Polyisoprene, and many other synthetic rubbers.
