Lipoic acid:Benefits, Function and Side effects
Lipoic acid (LA), also known thioctic acid, it is a white powder, soluble in water. pH of aq solns about 7.4.
Trademarks
Biletan (Gador); Thioctacid (Viatris); Thioctan (Katwijk); Tioctan (Fujisawa)
Structure
Lipoic acid contains two sulfur atoms connected by a disulfide bond in the 1,2-dithiolane ring. It also carries a carboxylic acid group. It is considered to be oxidized relative to its acyclic relative dihydrolipoic acid, in which each sulfur exists as a thiol.
Uses
Lipoic acid(CAS 62-46-4) is a natural occurring compound frequently used for treatment of diabetic polyneuropathy, enhances glucose utilization in various experimental models.
Function
Lipoic acid is a cofactor for five enzymes or classes of enzymes: pyruvate dehydrogenase, α-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase, the glycine cleavage system, branched-chain alpha-keto acid dehydrogenase, and the α-oxo(keto)adipate dehydrogenase. The first two are critical to the citric acid cycle. The GCS regulates glycine concentrations.
Benefits
Lipoic acid may help manage diabetes symptoms, reduce nerve pain, and support overall health.
Side effects
Lipoic acid is generally considered safe with little to no side effects. In some cases, people may experience mild symptoms like nausea, rashes, or itching.
Storage conditions
Keep containers tightly closed in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place. Store in a segregated and approved area. Store away from incompatible materials.
