Abaecin is a proline-rich antimicrobial peptide composed of 34 amino acid residues, primarily produced by honeybees in response to microbial or exogenous pathogen infections. It exhibits broad-spectrum bactericidal effects against Gram-negative bacteria such as Salmonella, Vibrio cholerae, and Escherichia coli. Abaecin holds significant potential for replacing antibiotics in livestock production. Due to its small molecular weight, low natural abundance, and challenges in isolation and purification, genetic engineering-based production of antimicrobial peptides has become a focal research area.
