Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), also known as glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), is a key enzyme involved in amino acid metabolism, catalyzing the transfer of an amino group between aspartate and alpha-ketoglutarate. It is primarily found in the liver, heart, skeletal muscle, and kidneys, with elevated serum levels serving as a biomarker for tissue damage, particularly in liver or cardiac diseases. AST antibodies are immunodetection tools designed to specifically recognize and bind to AST protein isoforms (AST1 and AST2) in research or diagnostic applications. These antibodies are typically produced in host species like rabbits or mice using purified AST protein or peptide antigens.
