Thioredoxin 2 (Trx2) is a mitochondrial-specific antioxidant enzyme belonging to the thioredoxin family, which plays a critical role in maintaining cellular redox homeostasis. It contains a conserved dithiol active site (Cys-Gly-Pro-Cys) that enables it to reduce oxidized substrates, thereby neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and protecting mitochondrial components from oxidative damage. Trx2 is essential for regulating apoptosis by interacting with apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 1 (ASK1) and inhibiting its pro-apoptotic activity. It also supports mitochondrial DNA synthesis and repair, energy metabolism, and cell survival under stress conditions.
