CELA1 (Chymotrypsin-Like Elastase Family Member 1) is a serine protease primarily expressed in the pancreas, with roles in extracellular matrix remodeling through the cleavage of elastin and other substrates. It belongs to the chymotrypsin family of proteases, which are involved in digestion, immune response, and tissue homeostasis. Dysregulation of CELA1 has been implicated in diseases such as chronic pancreatitis, atherosclerosis, and certain cancers, where abnormal protease activity contributes to tissue damage or tumor progression.

CELA1 antibodies are essential tools for detecting and quantifying this enzyme in research. They enable the study of its expression patterns, localization, and interaction partners in both physiological and pathological contexts. Commercially available antibodies (polyclonal or monoclonal) are often validated for techniques like Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and ELISA. Recent studies highlight CELA1's potential as a biomarker; for example, elevated levels correlate with vascular inflammation in cardiovascular diseases. However, cross-reactivity with other elastase family members remains a challenge, requiring careful validation for specificity.
