The SPTAN1 antibody targets α-II spectrin, a large cytoskeletal protein encoded by the SPTAN1 gene. α-II spectrin is a critical component of the cell membrane-associated spectrin-actin network, primarily involved in maintaining structural integrity, cell shape, and mechanical flexibility in various tissues, particularly neurons. It forms heterodimers with β-spectrin subunits, stabilizing plasma membranes and facilitating interactions with intracellular proteins like ankyrin and actin. SPTAN1 is essential for axonal development, synaptic function, and cell division.

Antibodies against SPTAN1 are widely used in research to study its expression, localization, and role in neurological disorders. Mutations or dysregulation of SPTAN1 are linked to early infantile epileptic encephalopathy, spinocerebellar ataxia, and traumatic brain injury. In diagnostics, SPTAN1 antibodies help detect spectrin breakdown products in blood, serving as biomarkers for acute brain injury. Additionally, these antibodies aid in exploring cancer biology, as altered spectrin expression is observed in certain malignancies. Commercial SPTAN1 antibodies are validated for techniques like Western blot, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence, making them vital tools for both basic and clinical research.
