The SPATA18 (spermatogenesis-associated 18) gene encodes a protein implicated in mitochondrial quality control and cellular stress responses. Also known as PGAM5-binding protein 1 (PGAM5P1), SPATA18 interacts with PGAM5. a phosphatase involved in mitochondrial dynamics and mitophagy. Studies suggest SPATA18 plays a role in eliminating damaged mitochondria by recruiting autophagy machinery, linking it to mitochondrial homeostasis and apoptosis regulation. Its expression is tissue-specific, with higher levels observed in testes, suggesting a potential role in spermatogenesis. Dysregulation of SPATA18 has been associated with male infertility, neurodegenerative disorders, and cancer, where mitochondrial dysfunction is a hallmark.
