The HPCAL4 antibody targets the Hippocalcin-like 4 protein (HPCAL4), a member of the neuronal calcium sensor (NCS) family, which plays roles in calcium-mediated signaling pathways. HPCAL4. also known as VSNL1-like protein, is encoded by the HPCAL4 gene located on human chromosome 1q25.3. It contains EF-hand calcium-binding domains and is predominantly expressed in neuronal tissues, though its expression has also been detected in non-neuronal cells. HPCAL4 is implicated in regulating cellular processes such as synaptic plasticity, apoptosis, and intracellular trafficking by modulating calcium-dependent interactions with target proteins.

Antibodies against HPCAL4 are utilized in research to investigate its expression patterns, subcellular localization, and functional roles in both physiological and pathological contexts. For example, studies have explored its potential involvement in neurodegenerative diseases, cancer progression (e.g., prostate cancer), and neurodevelopmental disorders. Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence are common applications. However, HPCAL4's precise mechanisms remain less characterized compared to other NCS proteins like hippocalcin or neurocalcin. Commercial antibodies are typically validated for specificity via knockout controls or siRNA knockdown to ensure accurate detection. Ongoing research aims to clarify its interaction networks and therapeutic relevance in calcium-related pathologies.
