The MRPL58 antibody targets the mitochondrial ribosomal protein L58. a component of the large subunit (39S) of the mitochondrial ribosome. MRPL58 is encoded by nuclear DNA and plays a critical role in mitochondrial protein synthesis, specifically in assembling the oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) complexes essential for ATP production. Mitochondrial ribosomes differ structurally and functionally from cytosolic ribosomes, reflecting their specialized role in translating mitochondrial DNA-encoded mRNAs. MRPL58 contains a conserved lysyl oxidase-like domain, suggesting potential involvement in protein interactions or structural stabilization within the ribosome.

Antibodies against MRPL58 are widely used to study mitochondrial translation mechanisms, cellular energy metabolism, and diseases linked to mitochondrial dysfunction, such as neurodegenerative disorders, metabolic syndromes, and cancer. They enable detection of MRPL58 expression levels via Western blotting, immunocytochemistry, or immunohistochemistry, aiding in the investigation of its localization and tissue-specific distribution. Dysregulation of MRPL58 has been implicated in impaired mitochondrial respiration, particularly affecting Complex I activity, and may contribute to pathologies like Leigh syndrome or other mitochondrial encephalopathies. Researchers also utilize MRPL58 antibodies to explore its interactions within the mitochondrial ribosome and its role in stress responses or apoptosis.
