The SETMAR antibody is a research tool designed to study the SETMAR protein, a primate-specific fusion gene product resulting from the merger of a histone methyltransferase (SET) domain and a mariner transposase (MAR) during primate evolution. Found exclusively in humans and some higher primates, SETMAR retains dual functional domains: the N-terminal SET domain, which exhibits histone methyltransferase activity involved in chromatin remodeling, and the C-terminal mariner-derived transposase domain, though the transposase activity is largely inactive in humans.

SETMAR plays roles in DNA repair, transcriptional regulation, and genome stability. It’s implicated in non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) repair and interacts with proteins like Ku70/Ku80. Dysregulation of SETMAR has been linked to cancer progression, neurological disorders, and viral infection responses. Its overexpression in certain cancers correlates with poor prognosis and chemoresistance, suggesting oncogenic potential.

Antibodies targeting SETMAR are used to investigate its expression patterns, subcellular localization, and molecular interactions in cellular models or clinical samples. These tools help clarify its controversial roles—whether tumor-promoting or tumor-suppressing—in different contexts. Commercial SETMAR antibodies are typically validated for applications like Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence, aiding both basic research and translational studies exploring SETMAR as a potential therapeutic target.
