UBE2Z (Ubiquitin-Conjugating Enzyme E2 Z) is a member of the E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme family, which plays a critical role in the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS). This system regulates protein degradation, post-translational modifications, and various cellular processes, including DNA repair, cell cycle progression, and stress responses. UBE2Z specifically catalyzes the transfer of ubiquitin to substrate proteins, often working in tandem with E3 ubiquitin ligases to determine substrate specificity. It is involved in forming Lys-63-linked polyubiquitin chains, which are associated with non-proteolytic functions like signal transduction and protein trafficking.
