Exerts a suppressive effect on the cytotoxic activity of natural killer(NK)cells.Upon activation,it triggers a specific increase in acid sphingomyelinase/SMPD1 activity,leading to a significant rise in intracellular ceramide levels.This activation also prompts the stimulation of AKT1/PKB and RPS6KA1/RSK1 kinases,along with a substantial enhancement in T-cell proliferation triggered by anti-CD3 antibodies.Functions as a lectin by binding to the terminal carbohydrate Gal-alpha(1,3)Gal epitope and the N-acetyllactosamine epitope.Additionally,it binds to CLEC2D/LLT1 as a ligand,thereby inhibiting NK cell-mediated cytotoxicity and the secretion of interferon-gamma in target cells.
