APOBEC3C (apolipoprotein B mRNA-editing enzyme catalytic polypeptide-like 3C) is a member of the APOBEC3 family of cytidine deaminases, which play critical roles in innate immunity by restricting viruses and retrotransposons through mutagenesis of viral or retroelement DNA. APOBEC3C specifically catalyzes the deamination of cytosine to uracil in single-stranded DNA, introducing mutations that impair viral replication. It is implicated in defense against HIV-1 and other retroviruses, though its activity is often counteracted by viral proteins like HIV-1 Vif. Beyond antiviral functions, APOBEC3C has been linked to endogenous genome editing, contributing to somatic mutations in cancers, particularly in contexts of chronic inflammation or viral infection.

Antibodies targeting APOBEC3C are essential tools for studying its expression, localization, and functional roles. They are widely used in techniques such as Western blotting, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemistry to detect APOBEC3C in cell lines, tissues, or clinical samples. Given the structural homology among APOBEC3 family members, specificity is a key challenge in antibody development. High-quality APOBEC3C antibodies must distinguish it from closely related isoforms (e.g., APOBEC3A, APOBEC3B) to avoid cross-reactivity.
