The NIT2 (Nitrilase-like Protein 2) antibody is a tool used to detect the NIT2 protein, a member of the nitrilase superfamily implicated in diverse cellular processes. NIT2 is evolutionarily conserved and ubiquitously expressed, particularly in the liver, kidney, and brain. Though its precise biochemical function remains under investigation, studies suggest it may act as a tumor suppressor by regulating cell proliferation and apoptosis. NIT2 is linked to metabolic pathways, potentially participating in amino acid metabolism or detoxification via nitrilase enzymatic activity.

In cancer research, NIT2 downregulation has been observed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), often due to promoter hypermethylation, correlating with poor prognosis. The antibody aids in studying these expression patterns via techniques like Western blotting, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and immunofluorescence (IF). Beyond oncology, NIT2 is associated with neurological disorders; altered levels are noted in Alzheimer’s disease models, hinting at roles in neuronal survival.
