CD35. also known as complement receptor type 1 (CR1), is a transmembrane glycoprotein encoded by the *CR1* gene. It primarily functions in the complement system, regulating immune activation by inhibiting C3/C5 convertases and acting as a cofactor for factor I-mediated cleavage of C3b/C4b. CD35 is expressed on erythrocytes, B cells, follicular dendritic cells (FDCs), and some phagocytes, playing critical roles in immune complex clearance, antigen presentation, and adaptive immunity modulation.

CD35-specific antibodies are essential tools for studying its biological functions and distribution. Monoclonal antibodies (e.g., clones J3D3. E11) are widely used in flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, and functional assays to investigate CD35's involvement in autoimmune diseases (e.g., lupus), infections, and cancer. In research, these antibodies help elucidate mechanisms of immune evasion, complement dysregulation, and pathological immune complex deposition.

Therapeutically, CD35-targeting antibodies are explored for modulating complement activity in disorders like paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria or enhancing antigen presentation in vaccines. However, challenges remain in balancing therapeutic efficacy with potential off-target effects due to CD35's broad expression. Recent studies also highlight CD35 as a biomarker for certain B-cell malignancies, underscoring its diagnostic relevance. Overall, CD35 antibodies continue to bridge gaps in understanding immune regulation and developing targeted therapies.
