The mitochondrial ribosomal protein S18C (MRPS18C) is a component of the small subunit (28S) of the mitochondrial ribosome, which plays a critical role in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Encoded by the nuclear gene MRPS18C, this protein is essential for assembling the ribosomal machinery responsible for translating mitochondrial DNA-encoded mRNAs, particularly those involved in oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). Dysregulation of mitochondrial ribosomes is linked to metabolic disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer.

MRPS18C-specific antibodies are valuable tools for studying mitochondrial translation mechanisms, ribosome biogenesis, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Researchers utilize these antibodies in techniques like Western blotting, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemistry to detect MRPS18C expression levels, subcellular localization, and interactions with other ribosomal proteins or regulatory factors. Studies suggest that MRPS18C may influence cellular proliferation and apoptosis, with altered expression observed in certain cancers, though its precise oncogenic or tumor-suppressive role remains under investigation. Additionally, MRPS18C mutations or deficiencies have been associated with rare mitochondrial disorders characterized by impaired energy production.
