ITGAE antibody targets the integrin alpha E subunit (CD103), a cell surface protein encoded by the ITGAE gene. Integrins are heterodimeric transmembrane receptors involved in cell adhesion, migration, and signaling. The αE subunit pairs exclusively with the β7 subunit (integrin αEβ7), forming a receptor that binds E-cadherin on epithelial cells. This interaction mediates lymphocyte retention in epithelial tissues, particularly in mucosal and barrier surfaces.

CD103 is predominantly expressed on intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs), regulatory T cells (Tregs), and dendritic cells in mucosal areas. Its role in immune surveillance and tolerance makes it a key marker for studying tissue-resident immune populations. ITGAE antibodies are widely used in immunology research to identify and isolate CD103+ cells, analyze their function in inflammatory responses, and explore their involvement in diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), cancer, and autoimmune disorders.

In cancer research, CD103+ T cells are associated with improved prognosis in epithelial tumors, as they may enhance antitumor immunity. Conversely, in chronic inflammation, CD103+ immune cells can contribute to tissue damage. ITGAE antibodies are also utilized in flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, and functional assays to investigate adhesion mechanisms and therapeutic targeting. Their applications extend to developing immunotherapies aimed at modulating integrin-mediated interactions in disease contexts.
