The COX7A2 antibody is a crucial tool for studying the cytochrome c oxidase (COX) complex, a key component of the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) involved in cellular energy production. COX, or Complex IV, catalyzes the final step of oxidative phosphorylation, transferring electrons to oxygen to form water while driving ATP synthesis. The COX7A2 protein is one of several nuclear-encoded subunits of Complex IV, specifically part of the catalytic core. It exists in two tissue-specific isoforms: COX7A1 (ubiquitous) and COX7A2. which is predominantly expressed in skeletal muscle and heart, reflecting its role in high-energy-demand tissues.

Antibodies targeting COX7A2 enable researchers to investigate its expression, localization, and regulation in physiological and pathological contexts. They are widely used in techniques like Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence to assess protein levels in diseases linked to mitochondrial dysfunction, such as metabolic disorders, neurodegenerative conditions, and cancer. For instance, altered COX7A2 expression has been observed in mitochondrial myopathies and tumors, where metabolic reprogramming is a hallmark. These antibodies also aid in exploring tissue-specific COX assembly mechanisms and responses to stressors like hypoxia or exercise.
