The CYP11B2 antibody targets the enzyme aldosterone synthase, encoded by the CYP11B2 gene, which plays a critical role in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). CYP11B2 is a mitochondrial cytochrome P450 enzyme predominantly expressed in the zona glomerulosa of the adrenal cortex. It catalyzes the final steps of aldosterone biosynthesis, converting 11-deoxycorticosterone to corticosterone and then to aldosterone via hydroxylation and oxidation. Aldosterone regulates blood pressure and electrolyte balance by promoting sodium retention and potassium excretion in the kidneys.

CYP11B2 antibodies are widely used in research to study aldosterone-producing adenomas (APAs), primary aldosteronism, and adrenal disorders. These antibodies help localize CYP11B2 expression in tissues, distinguishing it from the closely related enzyme CYP11B1 (11β-hydroxylase), which is involved in cortisol synthesis. Specific detection of CYP11B2 is crucial for understanding pathological conditions like hypertension and adrenal hyperplasia, where dysregulated aldosterone production occurs.

In diagnostic and experimental settings, CYP11B2 antibodies enable immunohistochemical staining, Western blotting, and ELISA to assess enzyme activity or expression levels. Their specificity aids in identifying somatic mutations (e.g., KCNJ5 variants) in APAs and evaluating therapeutic targets for aldosterone-related diseases. Research using these antibodies continues to clarify mechanisms of aldosterone regulation and its role in cardiovascular and renal pathologies.
